Mount Rose Highway

Nevada State Route 431 Between Reno And Incline Village Over Mount Rose Summit, About 8,900 Ft Often Described As The Highest Year Round Pass In The Sierra Nevada · Reno, Nevada

The Mount Rose Highway, Nevada State Route 431, is the mountain road between south Reno and Incline Village on the north shore of Lake Tahoe. In about 25 miles it climbs from the sagebrush of the Truckee Meadows, through Galena Creek's pine forest, to Mount Rose Summit at close to 8,900 feet, often described as the highest pass in the Sierra Nevada kept open all year, then drops in tight curves to the lake. On the way down on the Tahoe side a pullout gives one of the finest views of the lake anywhere on its shores, with the whole blue sweep to the far mountains. The road is also the way to Galena Creek Regional Park, Mt Rose Ski Tahoe, the summer wildflowers of Tahoe Meadows, the Tahoe Rim Trail and the trail up Mount Rose, at 10,776 feet the high point of the area. It is a short drive, about 40 to 45 minutes end to end, and most people use it simply as the quickest road from Reno to the lake; it rewards stopping. In winter it is a serious mountain road with chain controls, storms and closures, and it should be treated as one.

NO OPENING TIME HERE WAS CHECKED. The typical pattern: the highway is open 24 hours all year, subject to chain controls and closures in storms and wildfires. Galena Creek Regional Park is open during daylight, with the visitor center on limited days and hours. Mt Rose Ski Tahoe runs daytime lifts in the ski season, roughly November to April depending on snow. The summit campground is open only in summer. The traps that ruin a day are setting off in Reno sunshine to meet whiteout and a closure at the summit, arriving without chains when controls go up, parking on the shoulder to sled and getting towed, starting the summit hike too late for summer storms, and expecting to swim at Incline beaches reserved for residents. Confirm current times before relying on them.
