Mount Rushmore National Memorial
Memorial · Keystone, South Dakota
Sixty feet of Washington, Jefferson, Roosevelt and Lincoln carved into a granite face in the Black Hills, executed by Gutzon Borglum and his son between 1927 and 1941. Borglum called it the Shrine of Democracy. The mountain is Tȟuŋkášila Šákpe Pahá, the Six Grandfathers, to the Lakota, and it stands on land the United States took in violation of the 1868 Treaty of Fort Laramie - a fact the memorial itself now interprets rather than avoids.
13000 South Dakota Highway 244, Keystone, South Dakota, 57751, United States
⚠ THERE IS NO ENTRANCE FEE, BUT PARKING IS CHARGED - a per-vehicle fee valid for the calendar year, and it catches people out because the memorial itself is free. THE EVENING LIGHTING CEREMONY runs nightly in the warmer months and is free.
