Mount Tanigawa is a twin-peaked mountain on the Gunma and Niigata border, with two summits near 1,970 m - Oki-no-mimi is given as 1,977 m and Tomi-no-mimi as about 1,963 m; confirm both. It rises abruptly from the Minakami valley, easy to reach from Tokyo by Joetsu Shinkansen and a short bus to Doai. A ropeway takes visitors from Doai Station to Tenjindaira, where short walks open out above the tree line, and the summits are reached by walking trails. Be honest about the danger: the mountain is often named among the deadliest in the world for climbers, with many deaths, because weather turns fast, rock faces are steep and snow lies late. Casual visitors enjoy the ropeway and a gentle walk. Serious hikers must treat it as a real mountain, with a climbing plan form at Doai. It is worth it for the views and the cool air; it is not a stroll to the top in poor weather, late in the day or in sandals.
