Mount Washington and the Duquesne Incline
Viewpoint · Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania
The ridge above the south bank of the Monongahela, four hundred feet over the point where the rivers meet, reached by two surviving nineteenth-century funiculars that were built to carry coal miners home and now carry visitors. The Monongahela Incline of 1870 is the oldest continuously operating funicular in the United States and the Duquesne Incline of 1877 runs original cable cars with their wooden interiors intact. From the observation decks at the top the whole of downtown Pittsburgh sits in the fork of three rivers, which is the reason this view turns up on lists of the best in America with some regularity.

The Grandview Avenue observation decks are free public space, open at all hours. The Duquesne Incline generally runs from early morning to late evening daily; the Monongahela Incline runs as a transit service on a similar schedule with reduced Sunday hours. Both close periodically for maintenance — check before travelling if the ride matters.
