Mt. Baker Ski Area
Ski Resort · Bellingham, Washington
A small, deliberately unmodernised ski area at the end of State Route 542 in the North Cascades, with a base at 3,500 feet and a top at 5,089 feet. It holds the world record for snowfall in a single season - 1,140 inches, or 95 feet, in 1998-99 - a figure no ski area anywhere has approached since. There is no on-mountain lodging, no village and no real estate; everyone drives up from Bellingham or Glacier, and the culture is unapologetically about the snow rather than the amenities.
Mount Baker Highway (State Route 542), 56 miles east of Bellingham, Bellingham, Washington, 98229, United States
Winter season only, typically mid-November to late April depending entirely on snow, with lifts generally 9 AM to 3:30 PM. THERE IS NO NIGHT SKIING AND NO SUMMER LIFT OPERATION. In summer the road continues past the ski area to Artist Point, which is a separate and free attraction. Check the snow report and the road status together - SR-542 can require chains well below the ski area.
