Muhammad Ali Center

Specialty Museum · Louisville, Kentucky

A six-storey museum on the Louisville riverfront that Muhammad Ali helped plan in his own city, opened in 2005 and built around six principles he named rather than around his fights. There is boxing memorabilia and there is a training gym where you can hit a speed bag, but the building is deliberately more about conscientious objection, the civil rights era and what he did after 1981 than about the ring. It is a modest-sized museum about one of the most famous people who has ever lived, and the gap between those two facts is the thing to know before you go.
