Mulegé and Bahía Concepción
Pueblo MáGico / BahíA ConcepcióN · Mulegé, Baja California Sur
An oasis town where a palm-lined river meets the Sea of Cortez, and just south of it Bahia Concepcion - about 40 km of sheltered bay with calm turquoise water and small white beaches, often called the most beautiful bay in Baja. Mulege has a mission founded in 1705 on a hill above the river and a former prison known as the Jail Without Bars, where inmates were let out each day to work in town and returned at night; it is now a small museum. In the hills behind are painted caves in the great mural rock-art tradition of central Baja, visited only with local guides. Santa Rosalia, an hour north, is a French copper-mining town with a prefabricated iron church attributed to Gustave Eiffel's firm - an attribution that is disputed. The beaches along Highway 1 offer palapas and camping at modest prices but few services, so bring water and food. Summers are brutally hot, hurricanes can flood the river, and the highway is narrow, so drive by day. Winter and spring are best here.
