Twenty-one miles along the crest of the Santa Monica Mountains, with the Los Angeles basin falling away on one side and the San Fernando Valley on the other. It is named for William Mulholland, the engineer who brought the water that made the city possible, and it has been shorthand for Los Angeles in film for so long that driving it feels like a quotation.
