A Jade Green Lake Park On The Alaska Highway In The Northern Rockies, With Lakeside Campgrounds, Roadside Stops, Wildlife Including Stone Sheep, Mountain Goats And Bears, And Fishing For Lake Trout. A Scenic Stretch Of The Alaska Highway, With Fuel And Services Only At A Few Lodges · Muncho Lake, British Columbia

Muncho Lake Provincial Park straddles the Alaska Highway in the northern Rocky Mountains, about 200 km west of Fort Nelson and 100 km east of Liard River Hot Springs (confirm distances). Its heart is Muncho Lake, a long, deep lake of striking jade-green water, said to take its colour from copper and other minerals in the rock, and the highway hugs the shore for much of its length. Cliffs, folded peaks and avalanche slopes rise straight from the water, and stone sheep, mountain goats and caribou can be seen from the road. Lakeside campgrounds at MacDonald and Strawberry Flats give a base for fishing, canoeing and short walks (confirm names and dates). Services are limited to a few lodges, and the park is a long drive from any town, so plan fuel, food and time with care. The weather can swing from warm sun to snow within hours, and the lake can build waves quickly in a wind, which gives the place a wild, changeable feeling.

The park is open all year and the highway runs through it at any hour, but the campgrounds, boat launch and lodge services follow a short summer season, usually from about late May to mid September (confirm dates). Snow and ice can close pullouts and trails from October to May, and winter driving needs proper tires and emergency supplies. Summer days are very long in June and July, which allows late walks, but fuel and food may close early in the shoulder season. Check the highway report before a winter trip.
