Munich

Capital Of Bavaria; Marienplatz And The Residenz, The Englischer Garten With Its River Surfers, The Deutsches Museum, The Pinakotheken And The Theresienwiese, Home Of The Oktoberfest · Munich, Bavaria

Munich is Bavaria's capital and the most comfortably self-satisfied big city in Germany: a rebuilt baroque and 19th-century centre around Marienplatz, world-class picture galleries, a park larger than many city centres, and a beer culture that is genuinely part of daily life rather than a performance for visitors. The core is small enough to walk - Marienplatz, the Frauenkirche, the Residenz with its Treasury, the Viktualienmarkt food market and the Hofgarten all sit within fifteen minutes of each other - while the Pinakotheken, the Deutsches Museum and the Englischer Garten with its river surfers and nude sunbathing lawns are a short tram or U-Bahn ride out. Each autumn the Theresienwiese holds the Oktoberfest, which in 2026 runs from 19 September to 4 October. It is also expensive, conservative in temperament, and crowded in a way that surprises people who expect Berlin's space. The honest caveat is that the famous set pieces - the Glockenspiel, the Hofbraeuhaus - are the weakest things in the city, and the good parts are a street away.

The streets, markets and parks are open and free at all hours; the Englischer Garten has no gates. Most state museums, including the Pinakotheken and the Residenz, close on Mondays as German state museums usually do, with one late evening a week at some of them - confirm which. The Deutsches Museum opens daily including Monday. Churches open through the day but close the nave to sightseers during mass. The Viktualienmarkt trades Monday to Saturday daytime and shuts on Sunday, as almost all shops do by law; bakeries at stations are the Sunday exception. Beer gardens run roughly from the first warm March days to October, beer halls all year. The Oktoberfest grounds open daily through the festival, 19 September to 4 October in 2026, with free entry. Confirm current hours before a tight plan.
