Musalla Complex Minarets

Historic Site · Herat, Herat

What survives of one of the grandest building projects of the Islamic 15th century: Queen Gawhar Shad's mosque, madrasa and mausoleum complex, begun in 1417 when Herat was capital of the Timurid empire, extended by Sultan Husain Baiqara's madrasa at the century's end. Most of it was deliberately demolished in 1885 on British direction during the Panjdeh crisis; earthquakes in 1931 and 1951 and Soviet artillery took more. A handful of tilted, tile-flecked minarets — commonly counted five — the Gawhar Shad mausoleum dome and scattered fragments remain, cracked further by the October 2023 earthquakes, with an emergency stabilisation holding the worst-leaning tower. It is heritage at the edge of loss, and Herat's most haunting site.
