Museum Island

UNESCO World Heritage Site: Museumsinsel (Museum Island), Berlin (1999); Five State Museums Built Between 1830 And 1930, Holding The Nefertiti Bust, The Pergamon Altar And The Ishtar Gate · Berlin, Berlin

Museum Island is a cluster of five state museums on an island in the Spree in Berlin Mitte, built between 1830 and 1930 as a civic acropolis and inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1999. The Altes Museum holds classical antiquities, the Neues Museum the Egyptian collection and the Nefertiti bust, the Alte Nationalgalerie nineteenth-century German painting, and the Bode-Museum sculpture and coins. The fifth, the Pergamonmuseum, is the famous one and it has been completely closed since 23 October 2023. Its north wing with the Pergamon Altar and the Great Frieze is due back on 4 June 2027; the south wing, holding the Ishtar Gate, the Processional Way of Babylon and the Aleppo Room, is not expected to reopen until around 2037. Anyone flying to Berlin for those objects should know this before booking. What is left is still one of the great museum concentrations in Europe, best taken one or two houses at a time rather than attempted in a day.

The four open houses generally run daily except Monday, with later closing on one or two evenings at some of them - confirm each house, because the days differ and change. Last admission is usually about half an hour to an hour before closing, and galleries begin closing earlier than the building. The Pergamonmuseum is shut entirely, with no partial access and no walk-through, until the north wing reopens on 4 June 2027. The Neues Museum operates a timed-entry system in busy periods and the Nefertiti room has its own queue inside. The island's outdoor spaces, the Lustgarten and the colonnades, are open and free at all hours. Expect reduced hours and closed wings around public holidays - confirm.
