Museum of Glass

Specialty Museum · Tacoma, Washington

A contemporary glass museum in Tacoma built around a working furnace rather than a collection: the Hot Shop occupies a 90-foot steel cone on the waterfront, and visitors sit in a raked amphitheatre and watch teams of glassblowers work all day. It opened in 2002 in the city Dale Chihuly grew up in, and is joined to downtown by his Bridge of Glass, a 500-foot pedestrian span carrying his work in the open air, which is free.

1801 Dock Street, Tacoma, Washington, 98402, United States

Open Wednesday to Sunday in most seasons, generally 10 AM to 5 PM with shorter Sunday hours, and closed Mondays and Tuesdays - CHECK BEFORE TRAVELLING, because a closed-day arrival is the commonest complaint. The Hot Shop is live whenever the museum is open and the schedule of what is being made is posted daily. The Chihuly Bridge of Glass outside is free and open at all hours.
