Museum of Life and Science
Science Museum · Durham, North Carolina
Eighty-four acres in Durham that function as a science museum, a small zoo and a very large playground at once, split by Murray Avenue and connected across it. It began in 1946 as a children's museum and grew outward rather than upward: black bears and red wolves in wooded habitats, a two-storey tropical butterfly conservatory, a farmyard, a dinosaur trail and a train that runs around the site. It is aimed squarely at families and it is unapologetic about that.
433 West Murray Avenue, Durham, North Carolina, 27704, United States
Generally 10 AM to 5 PM daily with some seasonal Monday and Tuesday closures; closed Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. Ticketed. ⚠ IT IS SUBSTANTIALLY AN OUTDOOR MUSEUM ACROSS 84 ACRES, so weather matters far more than at a conventional science centre - the Butterfly House and main building are indoors but much of the best of it is not. The train is seasonal and weather-dependent.
