Official Art Collection Of The State Of Nebraska (University Of Nebraska At Kearney), In A Former Post Office · Kearney, Nebraska

The Museum of Nebraska Art, known as MONA, holds the official art collection of the State of Nebraska and is run by the University of Nebraska at Kearney. It sits on Central Avenue in downtown Kearney, in a handsome former federal building and post office from the early twentieth century, extended with a newer wing after a closure for expansion work (check the current layout and what reopened). The collection is devoted to Nebraska: artists born, trained or working in the state, and artists who painted the Great Plains as they passed through. That means prints from Karl Bodmer's journey up the Missouri in the 1830s, work by Robert Henri, who spent part of his youth in Cozad, Grant Reynard, Dale Nichols and Aaron Douglas, alongside contemporary Nebraska artists. Admission has generally been free. It is a small museum and honest about it: an hour well spent if you are already in Kearney for the spring cranes, the Archway or Fort Kearny, not a reason to cross the state on its own.

NO OPENING TIME HERE WAS CHECKED. The typical pattern: open Tuesday to Saturday roughly 10 or 11 am to 5 pm, with shorter afternoon hours on Sundays, closed on Mondays and on major and university holidays. Galleries can close for a few days between exhibitions while work is installed, and hours can change around events. The traps that ruin a visit are arriving on a Monday off Interstate 80, arriving in the late afternoon after the doors have shut, and coming for prints that have been rotated off the walls. Confirm current times before relying on them.
