Museum of Pop Culture
Specialty Museum · Seattle, Washington
A museum of contemporary popular culture founded in 2000 by Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen, originally as the Experience Music Project and built around his Jimi Hendrix collection. Frank Gehry designed the building as a heap of coloured metal shells said to derive from smashed Stratocasters, and the Seattle Center Monorail runs straight through the middle of it. The permanent strength is music - Hendrix and Nirvana, both local - with science fiction, fantasy and horror galleries alongside and a large rotating exhibition programme.
325 5th Avenue North, Seattle, Washington, 98109, United States
Open daily, generally 10 AM - 5 PM with longer summer hours. Closed Thanksgiving and Christmas Day. Timed tickets. The Sky Church venue hosts separately ticketed evening events which occasionally close parts of the building early.
