Museum of Science, Boston

Science Museum · Boston, Massachusetts

A science museum straddling the Charles River Dam between Boston and Cambridge, descended from the Boston Society of Natural History of 1830, which makes it one of the oldest institutions of its kind in the country. Its signature is the Theater of Electricity, built around the largest air-insulated Van de Graaff generator in the world — the machine Robert Van de Graaff himself built at MIT — which is fired several times a day and throws bolts of artificial lightning across a steel cage while an audience sits underneath it.
