Museum of the Cherokee People

History Museum · Cherokee, North Carolina

The museum of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians, founded in 1948 and located on the Qualla Boundary - the tribe's own land - in Cherokee, North Carolina. It tells thirteen thousand years of Cherokee history from a Cherokee perspective, including the Trail of Tears and, crucially, the story of those who stayed: the Eastern Band descends in significant part from Cherokee who evaded or resisted removal and remained in these mountains.

589 Tsali Boulevard, Cherokee, North Carolina, 28719, United States

Generally 9 AM to 5 PM daily with reduced winter hours and some seasonal closures; check before travelling. Ticketed. It is on the Qualla Boundary in Cherokee, at the southern end of the Blue Ridge Parkway and the North Carolina door to Great Smoky Mountains National Park - so it pairs naturally with both.
