Muskau Park
UNESCO World Heritage Site: Muskauer Park (2004), Shared With Germany. A Huge Landscape Park Laid Out By Prince Hermann Von Pueckler Muskau From 1815, Running Across The Nysa River On Both Sides Of The Border, With A Rebuilt New Castle, Bridges And A Walk Across The Frontier On Foot. The Best Known English Style Landscape Park In Central Europe · Leknica, Lubusz
Muskau Park is a vast English-style landscape park laid out from 1815 by Prince Hermann von Pueckler-Muskau, a nobleman who spent his fortune shaping meadows, lakes, tree groups and views along the Nysa river. The river is now the Polish-German border, so the park straddles two countries and is a single UNESCO site listed in 2004. The Polish side, around Leknica, is the larger and wilder half, with long paths, ponds and rebuilt bridges. The New Castle, rebuilt after wartime damage, stands on the German side, as does the town of Bad Muskau with its cafes and visitor services. You can walk across the river on footbridges, so a visit can mean crossing the frontier several times in an afternoon. Both countries are in Schengen, so there is normally no passport check, but carry ID. It is a place for slow walking and cycling rather than flowers: this is designed landscape, not a bedding-plant garden, and the Polish side has little in the way of cafes or signs.
Park Muzakowski, Leknica, straddling the Nysa river and the German border, about 130 km north-west of Wroclaw, Leknica, Lubusz, Poland
The park itself is an open landscape and is normally free to enter at all hours of the day on both sides, with no gates on the main paths. Paths are unlit, so plan to be out before dusk. The New Castle exhibition and tower on the German side keep their own hours, commonly closed one weekday and shorter in winter, and may charge an entry fee. Cafes, the visitor centre and bike hire are mostly seasonal, busiest from late spring to early autumn, and many close on one day a week or for winter. Footbridge crossings are free, but a bridge can be shut for repair or high water, so ask at the visitor centre. Confirm all opening times, and any border rule, close to your date.
