Mustafapasa (Sinasos)

A Quiet Village Of Carved Stone Mansions With Ornate Facades From The Greek Orthodox Community That Lived Here Until The 1920s, With Churches, A Medrese And A Few Small Cafes. A Calm Village Stop In Cappadocia, Away From The Bus Crowds · Urgup, Nevsehir

Mustafapasa is a quiet village of carved stone mansions about 6 km south of Urgup in Cappadocia, known until the 1920s as Sinasos. Its streets hold some of the finest nineteenth-century houses in the region, with arched doorways, window frames cut with floral and geometric patterns, and tall facades built by the wealthy Greek Orthodox families who lived here before the population exchange of the 1920s. A few of those mansions are now small hotels and cafes, while others stand empty or half restored. The village also keeps two old churches, one dedicated to Saint Basil and one to Constantine and Helen, both with painted interiors that may be open or locked depending on the day (confirm), plus a stone medrese beside the main road. The pace is slow, and most visitors come for an hour or two on a day loop from Urgup, wandering the lanes, drinking tea in the square and looking at the doorways. There is no single big sight, so the pleasure is in the quiet streets, the stone and the shade of walnut and plane trees.

The village lanes are open at any hour, and walking the streets costs nothing. Churches and other small sites are usually open in daylight, roughly 09:00 to 17:00 or 18:00, but many are locked and opened on request by a caretaker or the nearest cafe, so ask in the square - confirm. Village cafes and small restaurants open from about 09:00 to evening in season, and several close or shorten hours from November to March. Boutique hotels keep their own reception times, and some mansions are private and not open to visitors. Summer afternoons are slow and shaded.
