Mycenae

UNESCO World Heritage Site: Archaeological Sites Of Mycenae And Tiryns (1999) The Bronze Age Citadel Of Agamemnon'S Legend, With The Lion Gate And The Treasury Of Atreus · Mykines, Peloponnese

Mycenae is the Bronze Age citadel that gave its name to a whole civilisation: the Mycenaean Greeks, who dominated the Aegean from roughly 1600 to 1100 BC and whose kings Homer turned into the heroes of the Trojan War. Legend seats Agamemnon here, and the ruins still carry his story. You walk up to the Lion Gate, often described as the oldest monumental sculpture in Europe, framed by walls of boulders so huge that later Greeks said only the Cyclopes could have lifted them; past Grave Circle A, where Heinrich Schliemann dug up gold death masks in 1876, among them the one he called the Mask of Agamemnon (now in Athens, and centuries older than any Trojan War); up to the palace on the summit with the plain of Argos below; and down the road to the Treasury of Atreus, a beehive tomb whose stone dome is often said to have stayed the largest in the world for over a thousand years. With Tiryns it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site (1999). The honest caveat: this is stone, dust and imagination - the gold is in Athens, there is almost no shade, and noon in July is brutal.
