Myrtle Beach and the Grand Strand
Beach Town · Myrtle Beach, South Carolina
Sixty miles of continuous Atlantic beach from Little River down to Georgetown, and one of the most visited destinations in the United States — a domestic phenomenon rather than an international one, built on cheap accommodation, about ninety golf courses and a beach that costs nothing to sit on. It is unapologetically commercial and the people who love it are not confused about what it is. Two things on the Strand are more interesting than the marketing: Atlantic Beach, and the stretch of coast south of Murrells Inlet where the development simply stops.
Ocean Boulevard, Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, 29577, United States
A resort coast, accessible year round; THE BEACH IS FREE with no badge or fee, though beachfront parking is metered in places. LIFEGUARDS ARE STATIONED ALONG THE DEVELOPED OCEANFRONT IN SEASON ONLY — roughly late spring to early autumn, daylight hours — and coverage is not continuous along the Strand. Entertainment venues, the SkyWheel and the amusement parks are largely seasonal with reduced or no winter operation. July and August are extremely busy; two large motorcycle rallies fall in May. Municipal beach rules on tents, floats and umbrellas vary town by town.
