Nacogdoches
Heritage District · Nacogdoches, Texas
The oldest town in Texas, in the Piney Woods of the east — red brick streets, an 1830 dogtrot house with one of the earliest wine cellars in the state, a recreated Spanish stone fort, and a university azalea garden that turns the whole town out every spring. Nine flags have flown over Nacogdoches, three more than over Texas itself.

The town is free to walk and always open. ⚠ A FREE SELF-GUIDED DOWNTOWN WALKING TOUR is available from the Charles Bright Visitor Center — get it first. ⚠ Individual museums and historic houses keep SMALL-TOWN HOURS, with several closed Sundays and Mondays; check each before building a day around it. The Ruby M. Mize Azalea Garden on the SFA campus is free and is the reason to come in spring.
