Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame
Specialty Museum · Springfield, Massachusetts
A domed building on the Connecticut River in Springfield, where in December 1891 a Canadian physical education instructor named James Naismith nailed two peach baskets to a gymnasium balcony and wrote thirteen rules to keep his students occupied indoors through a New England winter. Basketball is now played in every country on earth and it was invented here, which is the fact that makes this a destination rather than a regional museum. You ride to the top and spiral down through the exhibits to a full-size court where anyone can shoot.
