Nancy Lake State Recreation Area

Alaska State Recreation Area · Willow, Alaska

A recreation area of about 22,685 acres of low forest and dozens of lakes just west of the Parks Highway near Willow, about 1.5 hours north of Anchorage. Its best-known feature is the Nancy Lake Canoe Trail System: the Lynx Lake Loop links lakes by short portages for about 8 miles from the Tanaina Lake trailhead, passing loon nests, beaver lodges and quiet campsites. Fourteen public-use cabins on Red Shirt, Lynx, Nancy, James, Rhein and Bald lakes have bunks, wood stoves, outhouses and fire rings, and are reached by canoe in summer and by ski or snowmachine in winter. The South Rolly Lake Campground sits at the end of the parkway, with campsites on a first-come, first-served basis. Cabins must be reserved. Moose and bears live throughout the area, and the lakes are fished for rainbow trout and, because of illegal introductions, northern pike.
