Naples

UNESCO World Heritage Site (Historic Centre Of Naples, Inscribed 1995), One Of The Largest Historic Centres In Europe, Holding The National Archaeological Museum And Its Pompeii And Herculaneum Collections · Naples, Campania

Everything else in the bay was seeded before the city itself, which says something about how Naples is treated: people come for Pompeii, Capri and the Amalfi Coast and pass through the place that makes all three reachable. It is the third largest city in Italy, its historic centre is one of the largest in Europe and a World Heritage site, and the archaeological museum holds almost everything ever dug out of Pompeii and Herculaneum, so the two most famous ruins in the world are half empty because their contents are here. Under the streets is a second city of Greek quarries, aqueducts and war shelters you can walk through. Above them Spaccanapoli runs dead straight through the old grid, laid out by Greeks and never moved. It is loud, poor in parts, ungentrified and genuinely intimidating on a first afternoon. It also invented the pizza, and it is the best place to eat in Italy. Do the archaeological museum before Pompeii rather than after, because almost everything portable from the buried cities is in it.
