National Aquarium
Aquarium · Baltimore, Maryland
The aquarium on Pier 3 of Baltimore's Inner Harbor that opened in 1981 as the centrepiece of the city's waterfront rebuild and became the thing Baltimore is known for. It is designed to be walked upward and then down: escalators carry you to a glass-pyramid rainforest at the top and you descend through the levels, ending in a ring-shaped shark tank whose spiral ramp takes you through the middle of it. It ended its dolphin shows in 2016 and has committed publicly to moving the dolphins to a seaside sanctuary.
