National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum

Specialty Museum · Cooperstown, New York

Opened in 1939 in a village of about eighteen hundred people on Otsego Lake, on the strength of a story about Abner Doubleday inventing baseball here in 1839 that historians agree is untrue. The founding myth was wrong and the institution built on it is the most serious sports museum in the world — three floors of collection, a research library, and the Plaque Gallery where roughly 350 elected members hang in bronze.
