National Civil Rights Museum at the Lorraine Motel

U.S. Civil Rights Trail Site · Memphis, Tennessee

The motel where Dr Martin Luther King Jr was shot on the balcony outside room 306 on 4 April 1968, kept as it was that afternoon — the two period cars still parked below, the wreath on the rail — and built out behind and around into a museum of the whole American civil rights movement. A second building across the street, the rooming house the shot was fired from, is part of the same visit and holds the investigation. It opened as a museum in 1991.
