National Flag Memorial
National Historic Monument To The Argentine Flag, Inaugurated 1957 On The Riverbank Where Manuel Belgrano First Raised It In 1812 · Rosario, Santa Fe
The National Flag Memorial stands on the bank of the Parana in Rosario, where General Manuel Belgrano first raised the blue and white flag of the independence army in 1812. It was inaugurated in 1957: a long, monumental complex of pale stone laid out like a ship facing the river, with a seventy-metre tower at the prow, a civic courtyard and a stairway of honour, and a crypt holding the memorial to Belgrano. A lift climbs the tower to a viewpoint over the river, the islands of the delta opposite and the city. For Argentines it is the most important patriotic site outside Buenos Aires, and on 20 June, Flag Day, tens of thousands gather here, and schoolchildren from across the country come to swear allegiance to the flag. Around it, Rosario, the country's third city, has one of the best riverfronts in Argentina, with parks, beaches on the islands and a lively bar scene. It is also the birthplace of Lionel Messi and Che Guevara, which many visitors find more interesting than the monument itself.

The esplanade is open at all times. The tower lift and the crypt keep daytime hours and close on some days; confirm. The Flag Day ceremonies on 20 June draw huge crowds.
