National Martyrs' Memorial
Memorial · Savar, Dhaka
Jatiyo Smriti Soudho: the national monument to the dead of the 1971 Liberation War, rising in seven pairs of angled concrete planes to a 150-foot point over the plain at Savar. Syed Mainul Hossain's design - chosen in open competition and completed in 1982 - reads differently from every angle, the triangles converging only from the axis, and stands in a formal landscape of lawns, reflecting pool and the mass graves of those the monument mourns. State visits lay wreaths here; ordinary days belong to families, school groups and anyone driving the Dhaka-Aricha highway with an hour to give.
Dhaka-Aricha Highway, Nabinagar, Savar, Dhaka, Bangladesh
Open daily through daylight hours, roughly dawn to dusk, free of charge; on 26 March and 16 December state ceremony reshapes access around wreath-laying and the crowds are national-scale. Early morning and late afternoon are the quiet, beautiful windows.
