National Memorial for Peace and Justice

Memorial · Montgomery, Alabama

Six acres on a hill above Montgomery, opened in 2018 as the first memorial in the United States to the victims of racial terror lynching. More than eight hundred corten steel monuments hang in a covered square, one for every American county in which a lynching has been documented, each engraved with the names and dates of the people killed there. The floor of the corridor falls away as you walk it, so that monuments that began at eye level end up suspended overhead. Outside, an identical set lies in a field, waiting for the counties they name to claim them.

417 Caroline Street, Montgomery, Alabama, 36104, United States

Generally open most days, roughly 9 AM - 5 PM, by timed ticket booked in advance. Closed some weekdays and on major holidays. Outdoor site — the monument square is covered, the rest is open air. Combined ticket with the Legacy Museum, shuttle provided.
