National Museum of Afghanistan
Archaeology Museum · Kabul, Kabul
The national collection of a country that has been the crossroads of Persia, Central Asia, India and the Hellenistic world — Gandharan Buddhas, Bagram ivories, Surkh Kotal inscriptions and Nuristani wood sculpture, held in a modest building in Kabul's Darulaman quarter since 1931. Looted and shelled in the civil war and vandalised under the first Taliban government, it reopened after the 2021 takeover and receives a steady stream of Afghan and foreign visitors. The famous Bactrian gold hoard is in state keeping and not on display; do not visit expecting it.
Darulaman Road, opposite Darul Aman Palace, Kabul, Kabul, Afghanistan
Reported open Saturday to Wednesday roughly 8:00–15:30, closed Thursdays, short hours Friday around midday prayer; Ramadan and holidays shift everything. Secondary-source hours — verify locally before travelling.
