National Museum of Anthropology
Museo Nacional (INAH) · Ciudad de México, Ciudad de México
Mexico's largest and most visited museum, in Chapultepec park, and one of the most visited museums in the world, with about 3.7 million visitors in 2024, more than any archaeological site in the country. Pedro Ramirez Vazquez built it in 1964 around a vast courtyard with a concrete canopy held up by a single slender column, with water falling from its rim. Twenty-three halls hold over 600,000 objects covering every civilisation that grew in what is now Mexico: the Olmec colossal heads, the Maya rooms, the Oaxaca gold and, at the centre, the Aztec Sun Stone, recovered from the ruins of Tenochtitlan. It is open Tuesday to Sunday and closed on Mondays, entry is modest, and a visit needs a plan: choose three or four halls, arrive at opening on a weekday, leave big bags in the cloakroom, and do the museum before any pyramid. Metro Auditorio or Chapultepec stations are a short walk away, and the courtyard cafe makes a good rest stop.
Av. Paseo de la Reforma s/n, Bosque de Chapultepec I Secc, Miguel Hidalgo, Ciudad de México, Ciudad de México, 11560, Mexico
Open Tuesday to Sunday and ⚠ CLOSED MONDAYS, like most INAH museums - which catches visitors constantly. A modest admission bought at the door. ⚠ SUNDAYS ARE FREE TO MEXICAN NATIONALS AND RESIDENTS, which makes Sunday by far the busiest day of the week; FOREIGN VISITORS PAY ON SUNDAY AS ON ANY OTHER DAY, so there is no advantage to going then and a considerable disadvantage. Come on a weekday morning. ⚠ LARGE BAGS AND RUCKSACKS MUST BE CHECKED into the cloakroom and this is enforced, with a security check at the entrance - do not arrive with luggage. Lockers and a coat check are provided. Audio guides and guided tours are available. ⚠ FLASH, TRIPODS AND PROFESSIONAL EQUIPMENT are restricted and need INAH permission; the halls are deliberately low-lit for conservation. ⚠ THE MUSEUM IS TOO LARGE TO SEE IN ONE VISIT - 23 halls and over 600,000 objects - so choose three or four halls before arriving. If you are also visiting Teotihuacán or a Maya site, come here FIRST.
