National Museum of Bangladesh

History Museum · Dhaka, Dhaka

The national collection at Shahbagh: four floors running from Bengal delta geology and the great sculpture galleries - Pala and Sena stone and bronze lifted from sites like Paharpur and Mainamati - through Mughal arms, muslin and textiles, folk craft, and the wrenching Liberation War rooms. Founded as the Dhaka Museum in 1913 and rehoused in the present building in the 1980s, it is the single best interior in the country for understanding what the outdoor monuments belong to, and the natural first-morning stop of any serious Bangladesh itinerary.
