National Parliament House
Modern Architecture · Dhaka, Dhaka
Louis Kahn's Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban - the seat of Bangladesh's parliament and one of the twentieth century's great buildings, a monumental composition of concrete cylinders, cubes and vast geometric voids rising from an artificial lake at Sher-e-Bangla Nagar. Commissioned before independence and completed in 1982 after Kahn's death, it is routinely ranked among the finest modern buildings anywhere, and architects travel across the world to see it. Most visitors experience it as Dhaka does: from the lawns, plazas and Crescent Lake edges around it, since interior access is restricted and permission-based.
Manik Mia Avenue, Sher-e-Bangla Nagar, Dhaka, Dhaka, 1207, Bangladesh
The exterior - lawns, plazas and Crescent Lake edges - is open public space, busiest and best at dawn and dusk; no ticketing. The interior is not open to walk-up visitors: access is permission-based through official channels and procedures shift - arrange far in advance or plan an exterior-only visit.
