National World War I Museum and Memorial
Specialty Museum · Kansas City, Missouri
The United States' official national museum and memorial of the First World War, designated as the museum by Congress in 2004 and as the national memorial in 2014. It opened in 1926 as the Liberty Memorial, paid for by Kansas City residents who raised over two million dollars in ten days in 1919, and the 217-foot tower has stood over the city ever since. The museum itself was built underneath it in 2006 and is entered across a glass bridge over a field of ninety thousand poppies, one for every thousand combatant deaths.
