Navagio (Shipwreck Beach)

Cove Below Limestone Cliffs Of About 200 M Holding The Wreck Of The Ship Panagiotis (1980); Landing On The Beach Suspended For Rockfall Risk · Anafonitria, Ionian Islands

Navagio, Shipwreck Beach, is the small cove on the north-west coast of Zakynthos where the rusting hull of a ship lies on white pebbles below limestone cliffs of about 200 m, framed by water of an almost unreal turquoise. It is one of the most photographed beaches in Greece. The first thing to know: landing on the beach is suspended through at least 31 October 2026 because of rockfall risk - no walking on the sand, no swimming in the cove, and boats must stay about 50 m offshore. Repeated rockfalls have also reshaped the cove. What you can do is look: from the free clifftop viewing platform near Anafonitria, straight down, or from a boat out of Porto Vromi, Agios Nikolaos or Zakynthos Town that stops off the cove for about 10-20 minutes, often with the Blue Caves. The wreck is widely told to be a cigarette smuggler, the Panagiotis, run aground in 1980. The honest caveat: this is now a view and a boat stop, and both the platform and the water are crowded in summer.

North-west coast of Zakynthos below the cliffs near Anafonitria; clifftop viewpoint off the road to Volimes, boats from Porto Vromi and Agios Nikolaos, Anafonitria, Ionian Islands, Greece

Open-air natural site with no gate. The clifftop viewing platform off the road between Anafonitria and Volimes can be visited at any daylight hour all year; it is free, with a small paid car park and a seasonal snack stand nearby. Boat tours run roughly from May to October, from about 09:00 to late afternoon, and stop in rough sea; winter departures are rare. The beach is closed to landing, swimming and walking through at least 31 October 2026 for rockfall risk - confirm the current rules before booking. Zakynthos Town is about 35-40 km away, roughly an hour by car; there is no practical public bus to the viewpoint.
