Navajo National Monument
National Monument · Tonalea, Arizona
Three large Ancestral Puebloan cliff dwellings in canyons of the Shonto Plateau on the Navajo Nation, built in the 1200s. Betatakin fills a huge alcove and is seen from an overlook at the end of the paved Sandal Trail; Keet Seel, one of the best-preserved cliff dwellings in the Southwest, lies at the end of a 17-mile round-trip hike by permit; Inscription House is closed. Rangers lead limited hikes to Betatakin in season. Entry, campsites and permits have been free. The visitor centre sits at about 7,300 feet, nine miles off US 160. Rangers explain the site from the perspectives of the Hopi, Navajo and other peoples connected to it.
