Navarro River Redwoods State Park

State Park · Elk, California

Navarro River Redwoods State Park is a long, narrow park in Mendocino County that follows the Navarro River along Highway 128 between Boonville, in the Anderson Valley, and the Pacific coast near Albion. It is a linear park rather than a single destination: roughly an eleven-mile corridor where second-growth redwoods shade the road and the river - confirm the extent - and the highway itself is the main way most people see it. The drive is a scenic winding route, cool and dim under the trees, with pullouts to reach the river. There is camping near the river - confirm location and flooding closures - and swimming holes in summer, canoeing and fishing, including steelhead and salmon seasons - confirm the rules. Anderson Valley wineries lie nearby. Fog, cool coast air, poison oak, ticks and winter flooding all apply. It suits drivers, campers and swimmers who accept a quiet, unstaffed setting, and it is a poor choice if you want visitor centres, marked trails or a long hike.

CA-128, Elk, California, 95432, United States

The highway corridor is open at all hours as a public road, but the park proper follows California State Parks rules, with day use generally from around sunrise to sunset and the campground on its own check-in and checkout times - confirm the current hours, whether a kiosk is staffed and whether a self-serve fee box is used. Winter storms can flood the river road, close the campground and bring slides or fallen trees onto Highway 128, so check conditions before you drive. Fog often sits over the coast end until midday, even in summer, while the inland end near Boonville can be hot. Services are thin along the corridor, so plan fuel and supplies before you enter.
