Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art

Art Museum · Kansas City, Missouri

Kansas City's encyclopaedic art museum, opened on 11 December 1933 and free to enter ever since. It is best known for one of the finest collections of Asian art in the western hemisphere - the Chinese furniture and the temple sculpture in particular - and for the Bloch Building, Steven Holl's 2007 extension of five translucent glass volumes stepping down through the lawn, which Time magazine ranked first among the ten best new architectural marvels in the world that year. On the lawn stand four eighteen-foot badminton shuttlecocks.
