Nelson Ghost Town and Eldorado Canyon
Privately Run Ghost Town Photo Stop And Techatticup Mine Tours In Eldorado Canyon, About 45 Minutes South Of Las Vegas · Nelson, Nevada
Nelson is a small, privately owned ghost-town photo stop at the head of Eldorado Canyon, about 45 minutes south of Las Vegas, where NV 165 drops through old mining country towards the Colorado River. The site is a yard of weathered wooden shacks, rusting cars and trucks, old fuel pumps, mining machinery and the wreck of a small plane said to be a leftover film prop, all arranged for the camera, and it is often described as a location for films, music videos, fashion shoots and wedding photographs. The owners also run guided tours into the Techatticup Mine, one of the old gold and silver workings of the canyon, which is said to have been mined from the 1860s and to have had a violent, lawless past. Beyond the town the paved road continues down the canyon to Nelson's Landing on Lake Mohave, inside Lake Mead National Recreation Area, where a flash flood in 1974 reportedly killed nine people and swept the old landing away. Nelson is a commercial attraction rather than a preserved park, and small, but with Boulder City, Hoover Dam and the river it makes a strong half day out of Las Vegas.
Nelson Road (NV 165), Nelson, Nevada, 89046, United States
NO OPENING TIME HERE WAS CHECKED. The typical pattern: the ghost-town yard and shop have opened daily or most days from mid-morning, around 9 or 10 am, to late afternoon, around 4 or 5 pm, with Techatticup Mine tours at set times through the day and the last tour well before closing; hours can be shortened in summer heat and on holidays. Nelson's Landing, as part of Lake Mead National Recreation Area, is generally reachable at any time, though the road can close after floods. The traps that ruin a day are arriving after the last mine tour, planning a sunset shoot at a yard that closes before sunset, driving out in a monsoon storm, and finding a new fee or a private booking in place. Confirm current times before relying on them.
