Neuschwanstein Castle

UNESCO World Heritage Site: The Palaces Of King Ludwig II Of Bavaria Neuschwanstein, Linderhof, Schachen And Herrenchiemsee (Inscribed 12 July 2025); Begun 1869 For Ludwig II And Never Finished · Schwangau, Bavaria

Neuschwanstein is the castle on the postcard: a white limestone fantasy of towers and gables on a crag above the Poellat gorge near Fuessen, in the Allgaeu foothills of the Bavarian Alps. Ludwig II began it in 1869 as a private retreat dressed in medieval costume, built with 19th-century engineering and drawn from Wagner's operas rather than from any real fortress history. He lived in it only a few months before his death in 1886 and it was never finished: only a small fraction of the planned rooms were completed, and whole floors behind the facade are still bare. Since 12 July 2025 it has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site as part of The Palaces of King Ludwig II of Bavaria, with Linderhof, Schachen and Herrenchiemsee. A visit means a compulsory guided tour of about 30-35 minutes on a timed slot booked well ahead, and no photography indoors. The honest verdict most visitors reach is that the exterior and the view from the Marienbruecke bridge are the experience, and the interior is a brisk, crowded walk through a handful of rooms.

Neuschwansteinstrasse 20, Schwangau, above Hohenschwangau village near Fuessen in the Allgaeu, Schwangau, Bavaria, Germany

Open all year, daily, apart from a few dates around Christmas and New Year - confirm. Longer hours in the summer half of the year, shorter in winter, with the last tour well before closing; the ticket centre down in Hohenschwangau opens earlier than the castle itself. Every visitor needs a timed slot, so your entry time, not the opening time, is what governs the day. Online reservations through the official Bavarian palace ticket shop open roughly eight weeks ahead and close a day or two before the visit; the ticket centre sells for the same day only, from about 8 am, in limited numbers. The shuttle bus and the horse carriages run in reasonable weather and stop in ice and snow. The Marienbruecke closes when icy or under maintenance - confirm before you travel.
