Nevada Museum of Art
Nevada'S Only Nationally Accredited Art Museum (Claim), In A Black Building Inspired By The Black Rock Desert; Home Of The Center For Art + Environment · Reno, Nevada
The Nevada Museum of Art is the main art museum of Reno and is often described as the only nationally accredited art museum in Nevada. It began in 1931 as a small art gallery and now fills a four-storey black building on West Liberty Street in downtown Reno, designed by the architect Will Bruder and opened in 2003; its dark, sloping, faceted walls are said to be inspired by the rock formations of the Black Rock Desert north of the city. The collections lean towards land and the American West: painting of the Sierra and the Great Basin, photography of landscapes changed by people, contemporary art and, through the Center for Art + Environment, a large archive on land art and artists who work with deserts, water and mining. Changing exhibitions fill much of the space, so what you see depends on when you go. It is an honest regional museum rather than a destination in itself, but a good one: two unhurried hours a few blocks from the Truckee River, Midtown and the casinos, with a top-floor terrace looking to the mountains.

NO OPENING TIME HERE WAS CHECKED. The typical pattern: open roughly 10 am to 5 or 6 pm on most days, with one later evening a week and one or two closed days early in the week, often Monday and sometimes Tuesday; closed on major holidays such as Thanksgiving and Christmas. The cafe and shop may keep shorter hours than the galleries. The traps that ruin a day are turning up on a Monday, finding a floor closed for installation between exhibitions, finding the top floor shut for a private event, and arriving within an hour of closing on a big-show day. Confirm current times before relying on them.
