Nevada'S State Museum, Housed In The Former Carson City Mint (1869), Where Coins Bearing The CC Mint Mark Were Struck · Carson City, Nevada

The Nevada State Museum in Carson City occupies the former Carson City Mint, a sandstone building on North Carson Street finished in 1869 that struck gold and silver coins from 1870 until 1893 with the famous CC mint mark, much of the metal coming from the Comstock Lode at Virginia City. The museum opened here in 1941 and the mint is still its heart: Coin Press No. 1, the original press that struck the first CC coins, stands on display and on some days is still run to strike commemorative medallions. Beneath the building a walk-through replica of an underground mine shows how Comstock miners worked, and the galleries cover Nevada's natural history, from a Columbian mammoth skeleton to the ichthyosaur, the state fossil, alongside Great Basin Native American collections and exhibits on the state's trails, towns and mining. It is a solid state museum rather than a blockbuster, best for a couple of hours in a Carson City day with the Capitol, the railroad museum and Virginia City.

NO OPENING TIME HERE WAS CHECKED. The typical pattern: open roughly 9 am to 4:30 or 5 pm on most days, with one or two weekdays closed (often Sunday and Monday or similar) and closures on state holidays; last entry usually about 30 minutes before closing. Coin Press No. 1 runs only on certain days and at set times. The traps that ruin a day are arriving on the museum's closed day, missing the press demonstration by an hour, assuming the State Railroad Museum keeps the same days, finding the Capitol shut on a weekend, and hitting the Nevada Day parade road closures in late October. Confirm current times before relying on them.
