Nevada State Railroad Museum
State Museum Of The Virginia And Truckee Railroad, With Restored Locomotives And Cars And Seasonal Steam Rides · Carson City, Nevada
The Nevada State Railroad Museum in Carson City is the state's museum of the Virginia and Truckee Railroad, the short line built from 1869 to haul ore, timber and people between the Comstock silver mines at Virginia City, the mills along the Carson River, Carson City and later Reno. At its height it was often called the richest short line in America. The V&T closed in 1950 and much of its equipment was sold off, a good deal of it to Hollywood studios for western films; the museum, opened around 1980, brought many of those survivors home. Its collection includes restored V&T steam locomotives, passenger coaches, freight cars and a rare early gasoline motorcar, shown in an interpretive center and engine house, alongside a historic depot moved to the grounds. On some weekends in the warmer months the museum runs short rides behind a steam engine or in the motorcar on a loop of track. It is a small, focused museum: train lovers can spend half a day, casual visitors one to two hours, and it pairs easily with the Capitol and Nevada State Museum in town.

NO OPENING TIME HERE WAS CHECKED. The typical pattern: the museum is open several days a week from mid-morning to late afternoon, roughly 9 or 10 am to 4 or 5 pm, and is often closed one or two weekdays, typically midweek, with shorter hours in winter and closings on major holidays. Rides run only on certain weekends, holidays and special event days, mostly from spring to autumn. The traps that ruin a day are arriving on a closed weekday, expecting a ride on a non-ride day, confusing the museum with the separate V&T tourist train depot on the east side of town, and a high fire-danger day that cancels steam. Confirm current times before relying on them.
