An Extinct Volcano Of About 4,260 M In A National Park (1936) Beside Its Active Neighbour, With Pine Forest, Alpine Meadows, An Occasional Dusting Of Snow And Long Hikes To The Top. The Volcan De Colima Next Door Is Closed To Climbers Because Of Its Activity. Reached On Rough Roads, Cold At Altitude · Ciudad Guzman, Colima

Nevado de Colima is an extinct volcano of about 4,260 m on the Colima-Jalisco border, the centrepiece of a national park created in 1936. Next door stands Volcan de Colima, one of the most active volcanoes in North America, which is closed to climbers because of its eruptions - so do not plan to go up it. Nevado is the safer and higher of the two, with pine forest, alpine meadows, rocky ridges, an occasional dusting of snow in winter and views toward the active crater. Access is by long gravel roads from Ciudad Guzman or from La Maria, and there are forest cabins, camping spots and a ranger station, but no shops or fuel. It is cold at altitude and can be wet from June to October. It suits fit walkers, campers and drivers with a sturdy vehicle, and is not a casual day out. It is worth the effort for the quiet and the views in the dry months, and not worth it in cloud or rain. Check current advice on the volcano and access before you go.

The park has no fixed gate hours that visitors can rely on. The ranger station and access points are normally attended by day, but staffing varies, so confirm locally. The roads are open in daylight and are best travelled in the morning. Volcan de Colima, the active volcano next door, is CLOSED to climbers, and the closed zone around it is enforced. Walking in the forest and meadows near the roads is FREE, while cabins, camping areas and any guide are paid at set prices. Roads can be CLOSED after storms or in snow, and cabins may be locked outside the booked dates. Hours and access change, so treat these notes as a guide.
