Nevado de Toluca
ÁRea De ProteccióN De Flora Y Fauna (CONANP) · Zinacantepec, Estado de México
Nevado de Toluca is a dormant volcano of about 4,680 metres west of Toluca and one of the highest places in North America you can reach by road. Inside its broken crater, at around 4,200 metres, lie two lakes, the Laguna del Sol and the Laguna de la Luna, which were sacred in pre-Hispanic times and have yielded offerings to archaeologists. Snow dusts the rim in winter and the view stretches to Popocatepetl and Iztaccihuatl on a clear morning. The drive lifts you from a city to over 4,000 metres in about an hour, so altitude sickness is the real hazard here. Entry is commonly MXN 50-100 (roughly USD 3-6) plus parking, and access rules change, with the upper road closing in bad weather. The area was downgraded from national park to a flora and fauna protection area in 2013. Go early, between November and March, dress for winter, walk slowly and be down by early afternoon, before the cloud and lightning build.
