Nevados de Chillan Ski and Hot Springs

A Ski Area And Hot Springs On The Flanks Of The Active Nevados De Chillan Volcanic Complex, With Long Runs Through Forest And Natural Thermal Pools · Pinto, Nuble

Nevados de Chillan is a ski area and hot-spring resort high on the slopes of an active volcanic complex in the Andes of central-south Chile, about eighty kilometres east of the city of Chillan. It combines things few ski areas can: long runs through open forest and across wide volcanic slopes, some of the longest in South America, fumaroles and natural thermal pools, and hotels built around hot springs so that skiers can end the day soaking in outdoor pools as the snow falls. The Valle de las Aguas Calientes, a valley of steaming vents and hot streams, is a short walk from the resort. Below it, the small village of Las Trancas has cabins, restaurants and cheaper lodging among the trees. In summer the area becomes a base for hiking, horse riding and mountain biking in lenga and coihue forest. The volcanic complex has been active in recent years, with eruptions that closed parts of the mountain, so the current alert level matters. It is a favourite winter escape for families from Concepcion and Santiago.
