New Caledonia Lagoons
One Of The Largest Lagoons In The World, Enclosed By A Barrier Reef Around Grande Terre; Lagoons Of New Caledonia: Reef Diversity And Associated Ecosystems, UNESCO World Heritage Site Inscribed 2008 · Noumea, New Caledonia
New Caledonia is a French Pacific territory east of Australia, and its main island, Grande Terre, is ringed by a barrier reef that encloses one of the largest lagoons on Earth. Large parts of the reef and lagoon system were listed by UNESCO in 2008 for their diversity of corals, fish, turtles, dugongs and seabirds. Most visitors start in Nouméa, the capital, with its beaches at Anse Vata and the Baie des Citrons and the Tjibaou Cultural Centre, Renzo Piano's building devoted to Kanak culture. From Nouméa, boats run to the Amédée lighthouse islet and other lagoon islets for snorkelling, and small planes and ferries reach the Isle of Pines and the Loyalty Islands, including Ouvéa. In the north-west, the Heart of Voh, a heart-shaped clearing in the mangroves, is seen only from the air. Visitors should know that serious unrest and riots hit Nouméa and other areas in May 2024, with deaths, burning and long disruption, and that the political situation remains sensitive; check current government travel advice before booking and follow local guidance.
Nouméa and the lagoons of New Caledonia, Noumea, New Caledonia, France
The lagoon, the beaches and most natural sites can be visited any day, but access depends on boats, flights, weather and, since the unrest of May 2024, on the security situation, which has at times brought curfews, road closures and suspended services; check current conditions before and during a visit. Boat trips to Amédée island and other lagoon islets run from Nouméa's marinas on most days in the main season, fewer in quieter months, and are cancelled in strong trade winds. The Tjibaou Cultural Centre keeps museum hours, usually closed on Monday, and its opening was affected after the 2024 unrest; confirm before going. The Nouméa aquarium and museums also keep regular hours with a weekly closing day. Scenic flights over the Heart of Voh depend on weather and bookings. Blue River provincial park has a gate and set opening hours and may close in heavy rain or high fire risk. Many shops and restaurants close on Sunday and in the middle of the day in smaller towns, and tribal areas outside Nouméa expect visitors to arrange visits in advance.
